FAQ

  • What does it mean to have an Ironroot Coach?

Working with one of our coaches means you will have a partner who is fully invested in your success as an athlete. Your coach will always be available to answer questions, review your training, and adjust things when needed. Your training will be reviewed and updated by your coach weekly, but you will also be able to interact with them as often as you’d like for any reason.

  • Do I get to choose my coach?

As long as your preferred coach has availability for a new athlete, you can choose who you’d like to work with. If you don’t have a preference, the coaching staff will discuss who would be the best fit for your goals. Occasionally, athletes have switched from one coach to another, but that is not very common. Most runners grow attached to their coach and build a great and long-term working relationship!

  • Is Contact with my Coach Really Unlimited?

Yes! Not only do we love hearing from our athletes, but we all can do a better job as coaches with lots of feedback. Once you are working with your coach, you’ll be able to contact them anytime you have a question, concern, or just want to share some news about how your training is going.

  • How Will I Interact with My Coach?

Communication platforms vary from coach to coach. Some coaches like to text their athletes a lot, others are more reliant on email. When you start working with your individual coach, you’ll work out a communication platform and frequency that works for you both.

  • Is There a Long-Term Contract?

We require new athletes to commit to 3 months of coaching because it takes time for the athlete-coach relationship to develop and all of our coaches put in a ton of effort up front with new athletes. After 3 months, payments are due in advance for the next month and you are free to cancel at any time. Discounts are available for longer term (6 or 12 month) commitments paid upfront.

  • I am a New Runner. Am I too slow to have a coach?

No way! We have worked with true beginners all the way to seasoned ultramarathoners and professionals. We are welcoming no matter your experience level as our primary motivation is seeing our athletes improve on their own running journey.

  • How Many Miles or Days A Week Do I Have to run?

If you are working with a coach 1-1, there is no standard number of days or standard mileage. Your coach will make sure that your schedule is a good match to your current life circumstances and goals. Training Plans are pre-set, with the volume and frequency of runs varying based on race distance and plan level.

  • How are Training Plans Delivered?

Our default platform for Coaching and Training Plans is TrainingPeaks (which is free to use as an athlete). In some cases, athletes have requested a different platform, the use of which would be up to their coach’s discretion.

  • Am I Required to Log My Training Online?

Your coach will require some mechanism to review and stay up-to-date with your training, but there is no requirement to post it publicly. The TrainingPeaks platform allows athletes to share their training ONLY with their coach. Your coach will work with you to find a solution you are comfortable with.

  • Do I Need to Use a Facy GPS Watch or buy other equipment?

We don’t require any specific type of watch, though there are additional features we can take advantage of (for real-time workout instructions while running, for example) when athletes use a newer GPS watch. We do recommend some inexpensive items for core/strength work (resistance bands, kettlebell or free weight, etc)

  • Will my Training Include Strength and/or Cross-Training?

We have developed several running-specific strength and mobility routines that your coach will likely add to your training plans each week. Many of our athletes choose to supplement their training with traditional strength training, which we support. When appropriate for your training volume and goals, your coach may also prescribe non-running aerobic cross-training.

  • Will My Coach Be Physically Present for my Workouts and/or Races?

Most of the time, the coach-athlete relationship is managed remotely as we work with athletes all over the world. If you are your coach are physically colocated, there may be times when you might meet up but the expectation is not that they will be present for all of your workouts or races.
